SEO tips for local businesses

SEO for local businesses is not as difficult or as time consuming as some are led to believe. There are many companies that do hold their hands up and admit they don’t have time to do their own SEO and outsource companies in to do it for them. That is fair enough but I would always advise people to choose very carefully when bringing in people to do their SEO for them.

Many bricks and mortar businesses have yet to take advantage of advertising locally on the internet.
I think this is mainly down to a perception that having a blog or website is a costly affair and is very hard to do yourselves. Actually, setting up a WordPress blog is quite straightforward and adding content to them is very easy. SEO is also perceived to be very complicated. But, in my opinion, if you have the time to create content then the process of this actually completes most of the SEO needed.

I have worked with many individuals and small businesses in my region. I have helped them set up their blogs and shown them how to get their content ranked high in the search engines. I also get contracted by companies who want their SEO doing for them.

Here are a few statistics about local business online:

• 60% and upwards of products and services bought locally are generated online.
• 71% of all searches online are local.
• Google takes up almost 70% of the local search engine traffic.
• Most local businesses don’t get on page 1 of search results. This is because they aren’t advertising locally online.
Having a solid blog is a great thing to have. You can create solid content on a WordPress blog and have that content ranked on Google fairly quickly. Content is king when creating brand awareness that brings in new customers and prospects.

SEO for local business is not too hard to learn. It is vital for getting on the search engines for all those local searches that are not being taken advantage of.

Writing a successful blog post

Writing a successful blog post

Writing a successful blog post will attract regular visitors to your blog. As long as the content is relevant to your blog and is interesting to the reader, your content will be well received.

Continually adding successful blog posts will only succeed in increasing traffic to your blog, making it more popular.

There are, however, some important rules to respect when writing a successful blog post, and they are:

• Using clean URL’s

• Writing consistent and relevant content

• Keyword and LSI Keyword use

• Video content

• Image content

• Bullet points

• Social Media posting

• Linking structure to other posts in your blog and to other bloggers

• Readers leaving comments

• Lots of content!

Using Clean URL’s

I’ve seen many blog posts or website page url’s that have a car crash of a url or link that just doesn’t make sense. It isn’t just important that humans can make sense of a url, but also the search engines. With a blog post the title of the post will be in the url. So if you choose a good, relevant title which is relative to the content you will end up with something like –

You can see the obvious difference here. Which one would you pick out that is clearer?

Writing consistent and relevant content

It is really important to stick to the subject in hand. Yes, you can discuss several topics or subjects within an overall niche or subject. Just make sure it is all relevant. For example, if your overall blog subject or niche is movies then you can talk about independents, action, drama, thrillers or horror. You can also discuss directors, actors, actresses or even stunt performers. What about locations used on period dramas. You can see from this example how you expand content in your blogs but keep the relevancy. This relevancy will please the search engines and get it ranked appropriately.

Keywords and LSI keyword use

Some people spend lots of time on this and some people just get it and quickly pick out the keywords they want to rank for and include in their posts. My take on it is simple as far as post writing is concerned. I look at the body of information that will make up the post and choose 5 keywords that are relevant to the content and use them throughout the content, making sure it reads sensibly. LSI keywords are used around the main keywords which are words relative to the keywords. For example, If I was to use the keyword turntable I would choose LSI keywords such as tone arm, direct drive, vinyl records and stylus.

Video Content

Video is king as far as getting ranked is concerned. There is also a tonne of traffic to be found and used online. It is still being under-used in my opinion and it’s too big a subject to cover here. You don’t need much equipment to do this successfully and you certainly don’t have to be Denzel Washington to be in a video! But check out this link to delve deeper within video content.

Image Content

The use of images in content hasn’t been used properly in my opinion. The use of emotional images along-with the SEO of alt-tags will help get your content ranked even higher. I consider this to be just as important as video marketing. Again, it’s not being utilised to its potential by the majority of bloggers. I will be posting out content regarding this subject very soon.

Social Media Posting

If you can get your content shared out to as many social networks as possible, the search engines will look at this popularity and it will result in better rankings for you. I now have profiles on nearly 20 social media sites and when i post new content on my blog, I bookmark it out to all of these sites. I also work hard on each individual profile as well because I want people to keep coming back to read the content and become friends or contacts because it’s all traffic at the end of the day.

Linking Structure

Linking to other posts in your blog is very good. It highlights the relevancy of all your content with each other and is good for overall ranking for your site. I also link to other bloggers as I think that if you can get many more people joining in the conversation or debate then again, rankings and popularity could increase.

Readers Leaving Comments

I always leave a comments box for readers to use at the bottom of the post. Commenting and having an opinion on a subject is what having a blog is all about. So get one put into your blog and finish your post with a leading question or invite comments. It makes it all so much more interesting.

Lots of content

Finally, writing a successful blog post will get you more traffic. It’s as simple as that. Answer the questions that people are asking on the internet. By doing this, search engine users will see your links and click on through. It’s not rocket science I promise.
