How to start an online business from scratch

How to start an online business from scratch. It seems that everyone wants to make money online these days and think that all you have to do is press a few buttons on your keyboard and make money magically appear in your bank account. If that were true, i’d be sitting next to Richard Branson on his island, drinking cocktails with my laptop open!

Having a profitable online business is all about mindset. It is, after all, a business and should be respected as such. Online marketing is not an amateur sport and cannot just be picked up by posting your links on Facebook or Twitter. Marketing is all about communication and telling your target audience about your product or service. Here are my 5 tips on how to start an online business from scratch.

  • Identify your passion in life. We all know something about something don’t we? Most of us have a passion in life and because we love that particular thing, it means we know a lot about it. The more passionate we are about something, the more enthusiastic and knowledgable we will be about our interests. Don’t choose any old product because you have a feeling it will sell and make you some money.

  • How are you going to create content nearly everyday or talk about your product on Facebook if you don’t really give a rat’s ass about shoe laces? Start with the one thing you know most about even if you think no-one will want to know about it – Believe me, the internet is vast and there’s a big pond for everyone to go fishing in.
  • You can get an easy to use website (blog) to write about your passions in life. I can help you get hooked up with a blogging system that you don’t have to get the domain name or hosting set up. It’s all done for you! All you have to do is take a look HERE and see how having a viral blogging system and using it to talk about what you’re really passionate about and how you love to live your life can earn you money and really get your business off the ground!
  • Create regular content. By posting regular content about your passion you can start to build attention and momentum to that attention. People will find your content on Google or Bing, or they’ll find you on Facebook or see your tweets on Twitter and follow you with interest. Regular content in your blog will make you an authority on your subject and the more consistant you are with your content then people are more likely to buy from you. Remember this – People buy from people.
  • Create social media pages around your business. Unless you’ve been living in a cave you will have heard of Facebook and Twitter. There are literally hungreds of these sites around. The phrase social media for me simply means ‘The Internet’. It’s essentially the same thing. Social media was just a phrase created to explain where people hang out online and talk about stuff. This is why the internet is such a powerful medium. It’s changed some societies and people have risen up against dictatorships. So if you think that the internet and social media won’t get you business then please don’t even waste your time. I suggest you get yourself a Facebook page and a twitter page and learn how to use them both because in minutes you’ll be able to find people and groups that are interested in your subject matter. Once you have your blog content published and ready to be read, you can send out your link to people so they can access it. Again, if you want some guidance and lessons on how to find prospects and customers using social media sites then get in touch with me.
  • Create buzz and attention around your product or services. Social media can really help with this. Newsflashes, product launches and questionnaires can be done on your Facebook fanpage to drive awareness to your business. Because your content can be shared amongst your facebook friends or twitter followers – this can be powerful in terms of reaching out to more people than you ever thought possible. This can be known as the viral effect – it spreads!

Once you have completed the above steps you just repeat, repeat, repeat and repeat.

How do I rank high on Google

How do I rank high on Google

People often ask me how do I rank high on Google? Well, I just follow some simple rules every single time and above all, I keep consistent. I’m going to go through some important pointers to give you a taster of what I do to achieve these consistently high rankings.

Researching Content Post Titles

This is one of the most important but most overlooked tactics.  A lot of network marketers inparticular, seem to overlook this important tactic. A content post title is the most important part of your content’s SEO because this is how your content will be found in the search engines. When someone goes to Google do you think they are about to search for, “today I went to the shops and saw a purple duck”? No-one on the search engines cares what you saw or what you think about purple ducks! They are going to type in their problem or issue that they need an answer for.

If you do not want any traffic from the search engines then I am sure that web 2.0 sites like Facebook will only be too happy to learn about your purple ducks!

Still, It is well worth tidying up your optimisation for your potential customers though because if you are not search engine reliant, you still need to answer people’s questions whatever medium you are using to reach people. You can goto Yahoo Answers to get a feel for what people are asking through forums and the search engines. Once you decide on something that fits with your market place, pop it into Google search as a phrase search and see how many searches it attracts. You can then decide whether it’s something you think will get you traffic without lots of competition.

Headings

Headings will help you rank high on Google because the search engines see headings as good SEO. It splits the content up into readable chunks and is good for the user experience. Try and put some good keywords in there so it describes the content that is coming.

Linking Structure

Linking structure is all important when looking at the overall SEO for your content. Linking your content to authority sites and to content within your blog will work in your favour. Linking to other sites, especially authority sites will show the search engines that you are providing the visitor with good content and with options to really find the information they need. It will also get you good links which the search engines see as votes for your content. I like to send people to other pieces of content within my blog and also send them to my Facebook page and sometimes my You Tube Channel. It keeps visitors within my brand and it helps build their trust.

Using Videos Within Your Content

You’ll know from my blog, that my opinion of video is huge. You Tube currently gets approximately 1 billion hits every day. There are other video platforms such as Daily Motion and Vimeo. They all get a ton of traffic every-day and you could be getting some of that. If one of your videos is optimised properly and has a big-time keyword in there, you could be going viral with your product or service and you’ll get loads of traffic and hopefully some sales and sign-ups. My You Tube videos are ranking just as high or higher than my blog content and I have links in there to send traffic to.

Social network Posting

Once you have completed your piece of content and published it, it will get picked up by the search engine spiders and it will get ranked. The next thing to do is to share your content where there are millions of people on another medium – Social networking sites.

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Delicious and Google+ are just a few examples of the huge amount of networking sites that are online. Each different site has a different way of sharing content and are used by different groups of people. As an example, reddit and Pinterest are used by different types of people and the sites are completely different.

Reddit is used mainly by males who are into tech and Pinterest is mainly used by women. When you look at your product or service you must research where your market place is represented online and goto it. This is just targeting your traffic, going upto it and putting your product or service within it.

I goto Facebook groups and search for groups that are appropriate to my niche or market place. Then I have prospects ready to approach in a friendly manner. I use Twitter search to put my keywords into and I can find people to approach and help them with my blog posts. Like forum posting it can take time but well worth it.

So, when asking how do I rank high on Google, take into account the points I have raised above. I could go into each subject much more deeply but I’ll happily go into that if you want to get in touch with any questions you may have.

I have been using WordPress Blogs for a long time as it is easy to add fresh new content whenever I want. Unique content is exactly what the search engines want and so do people using the search engines. Companies such as Google and Bing are in the information business and all they want to do is to provide the searcher with the most accurate results to the search. The combination of keywords and relative information to the content title will ensure that in time, your content will rank highly in the search engines.

You know your business best:

Many companies, small businesses and individuals employ SEO companies to take care of their search engine optimisation. This can be because some people don’t have the time or think they don’t have the time to do it themselves. Some people think it’s very complicated and some SEO companies give them the impression that it’s very complicated. It’s a lot more straight forward than people think and it can be done with some regular maintenance work.

There are some really good, ethical SEO companies out there but due diligence must be done properly if you really do want to go down that road. But if there is room in your weekly schedule or in that of your staff then I recommend you do it yourself.

As you know your products and services better than anyone, you should be in control of writing or planning your site content. It might sound really obvious but I have seen too many blog posts made by outside contractors brought in by business owners. The content simply won’t convert into good number of sales. How does someone in another country or even county know how to write passionately about local beer produced in Halifax for example. Control your content and you will get better sales or leads.

Internet marketing help for Halifax businesses can come in the form of setting up your blog and social media portfolio. I can train you up to do it yourself or I can set it all up and run a maintenance period in where i can input new content that you have produced or proof read.  I regularly design bespoke packages for individuals and businesses in Halifax as well as across the globe.

SEO tips for local businesses

SEO for local businesses is not as difficult or as time consuming as some are led to believe. There are many companies that do hold their hands up and admit they don’t have time to do their own SEO and outsource companies in to do it for them. That is fair enough but I would always advise people to choose very carefully when bringing in people to do their SEO for them.

Many bricks and mortar businesses have yet to take advantage of advertising locally on the internet.
I think this is mainly down to a perception that having a blog or website is a costly affair and is very hard to do yourselves. Actually, setting up a WordPress blog is quite straightforward and adding content to them is very easy. SEO is also perceived to be very complicated. But, in my opinion, if you have the time to create content then the process of this actually completes most of the SEO needed.

I have worked with many individuals and small businesses in my region. I have helped them set up their blogs and shown them how to get their content ranked high in the search engines. I also get contracted by companies who want their SEO doing for them.

Here are a few statistics about local business online:

• 60% and upwards of products and services bought locally are generated online.
• 71% of all searches online are local.
• Google takes up almost 70% of the local search engine traffic.
• Most local businesses don’t get on page 1 of search results. This is because they aren’t advertising locally online.
Having a solid blog is a great thing to have. You can create solid content on a WordPress blog and have that content ranked on Google fairly quickly. Content is king when creating brand awareness that brings in new customers and prospects.

SEO for local business is not too hard to learn. It is vital for getting on the search engines for all those local searches that are not being taken advantage of.
